Today we’re continuing our mixing tips series, and number 3 is simple, but incredibly important:
Mix at a comfortable volume
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is monitoring too loud for too long.
When the volume is crankedeverything sounds exciting.
The low end feels bigger, and the highs feel more exciting.
And it’s just harder that way to judge the balance of the mix accurately.
Instead, the bulk of the work should be done at a moderate and comfortable volume.
A level that you can listen for long periods of time without fatigue.
Now, don’t get me wrong, you should absolutely checkyour mix at loud volumes, too!
But that shouldsimply be a check, not where most of the work happens.
Also conversely, and just as important, you should check your mix at quieter and lower volumes
When the volume is low ask yourself:
- Can I still hear the kick drum?
- Can I still hear the snare drum?
- Can I still hear the vocals?
- Can I still hear all the important elements of the arrangement?
If something disappears when the volume is low, that’s usually a sign that the balance of the mix needs work.
So bottom line, next time you’re mixing, do most of the work at a comfortable and conservative level.
Check it loud, check it quiet, and you will make better mixing decisions.
Hope this helps you!
