Hey everyone!
Here’s a bonus tip from the Mixing mini-series.
And here’s the best tip that I can give to those recording themselves at home and planning to send their tracks for professional mixing.
How to tell if your song is ready for mixing?
This is how you know:
Raise the faders, create a quick fader mix, and do nothing else! And listen.
No EQ, no compression, no fancy plugins. Just faders.
If the quick and simple fader mix sounds the way you like it, the way you envision it, and it already sounds pretty good. You’re in great shape!
That means that you’re very likely ready for professional mixing
Why?
Because that means the arrangement works, the performances work, and the tones are working well together.
At that point, mixing becomes enhancing what’s already there.
Not about solving poor recording and poor performances.
And don’t get me wrong. A great mix still requires EQ, compression, and automation.
But those tools should help elevate the song, not rescue it.
In my experience, the best mixes usually start this way.
Raise the faders, and the song already feels exciting!
The foundation already feels solid.
Next time you’re recording, if you’re wondering if you’re ready for professional mixing, ask yourself:
If I raise the faders, does this already sound like a song?
Or does it sound like a collection of problems waiting to be fixed?
Because the closer you get it at that recording stage, the easier and better mixing will be.
And the better the final result will turn out.
So, bottom line:
Fader mix is very important, and that’s how you can tell, in my opinion, if you’re ready for professional mixing.
